Teaching As a Spiritual Journey
![]()
When I first began to understand that teaching is a spiritual journey (and that much spiritual growth can occur here), I began to start each day in prayer. On the way to work, I recite the Lord's Prayer over and over until a sense of peace settles throughout my spirit. Then during our moment of silence I pray for my students.
Dear Lord, Please bless me into usefulness this day. Please fill my heart and my classroom with the love, wisdom, and guidance of the Holy Spirit. Please show me which children need help the most and then show me how to help them. Help me be a blessing to at least one child today. And Dear Lord, please send me a miracle today and the wisdom to recognize it when it comes! Amen.
If I have certain students who are giving me problems, I also include their names. If I forget to start each day with prayer, my day seems to go from bad to worse. (So I seldom forget anymore!) Inviting God into my classroom gives me a sense of peace and protection throughout the day.
If I have extremely troublesome students that do not respond to my normal classroom discipline techniques, I offer another prayer to God.
Dear Lord, Please show me how to help this child in particular. I have tried everything I know and nothing is working. Please send me divine wisdom. Amen.
If after a few weeks the child is not showing any improvement I ammend the prayer somewhat.
Dear Lord, Please show me how to help this child in particular. I have tried everything I know and nothing is working. If you do not think I will be able to help this child, please send him/her to someone who can. Amen.
Then usually within one to two weeks, the child either improves or moves on to another school! My first choice is to always try to help the child. But sometimes, someone else may have more insight or wisdom than I do.
