The following is a list of traits of good teachers. This list was compiled during research and is constantly being added to. If you would like to offer more traits feel free to email us by going to the "feedback" button.
Signs of a Good Teacher:
Looks at the child first, wants to know the child as a person
Makes use of a child’s natural curiosity and imagination by encouraging them to think, not just memorize
Can admit when they have made a mistake
Has a good sense of humor
Is skilled at recognizing individual needs and different styles of learning, and develops lesson plans designed to meet these various styles
Able to diagnose learning difficulties and will establish plans to lessen them
Children seem eager to learn and may actually enjoy some of the assignments
Is willing to try new teaching techniques (not stuck in the past)
Challenges students and stretches their boundaries (be wary when class work is too easy)
Does not rely on seat work to keep children busy all day
Does not prepare gender biased lessons (women can only be teachers, nurses, etc.)
Will listen to your concerns without becoming defensive (unless you are angry)
Will handle discipline problems consistently and fairly
Has a set of classroom rules and enforces them
Works on increasing students’ self-esteem.
